Night Shift culture at work is here and how, thanks to the growing BPO sector worldwide. Then there are industries mainly healthcare, hospitality, IT and media that too demands equal contribution from employees working at night. Research has shown that many employees working for night shifts suffer from physical ailments like tiredness, sleeplessness, fatigue, indigestion that eventually disturb their mental well being too. All this could lead to long term health problems and affect an employee’s performance as well.

It’s important to know how to manage night shifts at work with due attention towards health. Take break from work while working during night and come out in fresh air as many times as possible. Even if your tight schedule doesn’t allow leaving your chair, make a point that you at least go to the wash room and wash your eyes. This would not only keep you fresh, but is also good for eyes, especially now days when you have to work on computer.

Drowsiness is a common problem with almost all night shift workers. Make sure that you don’t get hooked to only tea or coffee to shoo away this lethargy. Munching on fruit salads, vegetable salads or any fiber rich food would be better option rather. This is good for digestion and supplies sufficient nutrient too to your body while working. Besides managing night shifts while working, you can also follow a regime in daily life that would help you cope up with your night shift job. Balanced diet, exercise, yoga and the like are a must to have a healthy living if you are in a night shift job.

It’s also an equal responsibility of the employer to make sure that the employees are comfortable with night shifts. To help them survive happily in work, an employee should make certain arrangements that would account for both employees’ and organization’s growth. For instance, playing soft music at work place during night shifts would ensure that workers enjoy their work and hence, contribute towards growth of the company too. Similarly, employer should ensure safety of employees too during night shifts as it’s another risk factor in night shift jobs. No one should be allowed to work alone or leave alone. Adequate pick and drop facility should be given till door step.

It’s the personal life of workers that also get affected a lot from night shifts. The best way to confront on this problem would be to keep communication open with friends and family. Their support can always help you win any odds in life. Above all, following a disciplined lifestyle combined with punctuality, balanced diet and commitments to one’s work would surely be a big aid in managing night shifts. However, if you are unable to adjust totally, waste no time to see a doctor or counselor soon. Also, don’t hesitate to talk to your employer if managing night shifts seem impossible for you. There must be a way out.
